This month’s teen is Alyssa.

If someone said the word overcome to you, what would you think of?
Overcoming to me is getting over something hard that has happened. It could involve other people as well. It makes me think of an obstacle course and having to get through those hurdles.

What is the opposite of overcoming to you?
The opposite of overcoming to me is giving up and not trying to get through the challenge. Also, just excepting the untrue fact that things will never get better.

What famous person do you think overcame well?
Bethany Hamilton is the main person I think of because she had to learn how to surf after she lost her arm due to a shark attack. She didn’t just sit around and wait, she worked hard to get better at surfing and not being afraid while doing so.

Who is someone you know who has overcome?
A close friend of mine overcame anxiety. This was hard for her, but she did it with the help of people there to support her. She got a therapist and then she had her closer friends to help as well. She also needed to learn ways to cope with it and how to know when to get support if things got serious.

What is something you’ve had to overcome?
Something I have overcome is when my best friend moved away. This was hard for me and I had to get used to not having her live nearby and not being able to see her anymore. Also, since she was my best friend, I had to go through a period of time in my life without someone like her to talk to. But, over time I made new friends and I still keep in close touch with her.
